We have been doing a lot of research on how difficult the enzyme, Lactose, found within dairy products, can be for people to digest. In fact, did you know that experts estimate that about 68% of the world’s population has lactose malabsorption?

So that you are aware, as we age, we decrease or stop producing an enzyme within our body called Lactase. This enzyme is what breaks down Lactose in dairy. We know, it’s kind of confusing, but what happens is that dairy can cause our gut to get inflamed; AKA: as “fluid retention.”

Because you are trying to get in protein with every meal, it’s very natural to resort to dairy. These are the typical “offenders:” Whey protein powder (smoothies and most meal replacement bars), cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and cheese.

We found some plant-based or lactose free alternatives for you that appear to be readily available and offer a good amount of protein with low carbs and fat.

Please consider shifting over to these products if you eat dairy on a regular basis, or if you’re not losing weight (like you think you should be), feel bloated, have either constipation or diarrhea.

We don’t love most plant-based cheeses though as the fat content tends to be worse than regular dairy cheese. Just minimize or cut that out altogether if possible.
